CUISINE

Sydney has become such a multicultural city that the influences of food from around the world have made their mark on Sydney cuisine.

Popular Sydney restaurants include The Summit at the top of Australia Square and Doyles on West Circular Quay, at Watsons Bay and in the Fisherman's Market. There's a row of fine Sydney restaurants along East Circular Quay on the way to the Sydney Opera House.

CURRENCY

Australia's currency operates on a decimal system, with the dollar (AUD$) as the basic unit and 100 cents (¢) equaling $1. Bills come in $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5 denominations, differentiated by color. Coins are minted in $2, $1, 50¢, 20¢, 10¢, and 5¢ denominations. The Australian 1 cent and 2 cent coins are no longer in circulation, so totals are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents. For security and longevity, Australian banknotes are made of a durable plastic that make it difficult to reproduce.
Banks are open Monday to Thursday 9:30am to 4pm and on Fridays from 9:30am to 5pm.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS

As in any other big city, it is important to take responsibility for your personal safety and exercise precaution.

BEFORE YOU GO

Think preventively when packing for your trip; consider leaving behind expensive jewelry, watches, and items of sentimental value. A smaller, inexpensive camera may be a better choice than larger, expensive models. You may not need to take an ATM card if your credit card and a limited amount of cash will suffice.

Make a Xerox copy of your passport
to carry in your luggage separately from your actual passport. Consider storing a digital scan of your passport (and/or other critical documents) with family, friends, or your employer so that it could be emailed to you in an emergency.

TIPPING

Throughout Australia, tipping used not to be customary but is becoming more widespread. In a restaurant a tip of 10% is now normal although some restaurants have started adding a service charge to the bill. Porters and staff at larger hotels can be offered a gratuity for good service, but it is purely discretionary. Taxi drivers may not expect a tip unless helping with luggage, but it is usual to round the fare up to the nearest dollar.

TRANSPORTATION

Taking a Taxi?

Each terminal has its own sheltered taxi rank with supervisors on hand in peak hours to ensure a smooth flow of taxis for travellers.

Kerbside supervisors can also organise taxis with baby capsules, wheelchair access, 5 seaters, station wagons for lots of baggage, and maxi taxis for groups.

Here are some approximate return fares you can expect to pay to and from Sydney Airport. Remember passengers pay for any bridge or road tolls on top of the fare (these fares are in Australian dollars and are based on non-peak traffic conditions):

Rerturn fare to Sydney Airport:

    *      Sydney City $50
    *      North Sydney $65
    *      Manly $103
    *      Parramatta $165
    *      Liverpool $114
    *      Cronulla $89

A $2.50 airport toll is payable by all passengers taking a taxi from any of Sydney Airport's taxi ranks.

Taxi Tips

Drivers are required to accept all fares, big and small, from the airport. If you are only travelling a short distance, drivers can return back to their place in the queue after they have taken you to where you need to go. The kerbside management team will help you and your driver with this request.

Please note that taxis are not permitted to pick up passengers outside of the taxi ranks and the driver will be fined AUD $5,000 for breaking the regulation.
