Eric

Verisign offer the .com and .net data with changes available for download
every 5 minutes for a fee of $15,000 per month for commercial use.
Alternatively, one can apply to become an ICANN accredited Registrar
(costing approx. $6,500 and requiring at least $70,000 in the bank) and pay
a reduced fee of $1,000 for the same information - which is probably a truer
reflection of an actual cost model for the service.

The fees seem more than a little expensive for the commercial option IMHO.
I can only hope that ICANN's Advisory Group for a Central Zone File
Repository are successful as this will open the market for the design of
lo-cost security options protecting ALL against trademark infringement,
domain name registration account attacks and phishing as opposed to the
protection of just those that can currently afford such services (Fortune
1000).

I wondered if anyone on this list has any opinions on who owns the data held
by gTLD Zone Managers? I understand that gTLD Zone File Managers are
obligated to supply the data (whereas ccTLD Managers are not) but I think it
is worth while looking into how this data can be made more accessible to
bonafide companies for the creation and enhancement of tools related to
internet security but also regulated in order that it may not be exploited
for illegal purposes (spamming etc.)

Any input welcome, on list and off, as this forms part of my PhD research
into building tools for internet/trademark/phishing security purposes.

Debbie,

Are you reciting something from somewhere? Let me tell you something.
Picture me getting out of a 79' chevy, walking a dust covered dirt road into
a registry --- your choice, So. America, SubSaharan, SouthEast Asia,, to
show proof of my business license and register a domain name, after some
extra cash the name is manually entered into a ccTLD data base for .OMG.
Some freakin way it gets batched and sent off to a Major NIC. I have been
in such Registries. And now who is required to do what in 10 minutes???? --
Oh yeah, I am shot at by some gov. or insurgents on my way back to my -7
Star hotel. Oh and then my gaurdian warlord/druglord/Christian seperatist
says I am all good to meet with the PM for dinner, do I have the check?
Did you know that some registries operate off of dial-up and lines still get
cut by train bandits???

Whoever is making this announcement and mandate for all registries needs a
serious wake up call.

Eric

It is necessary for this information to be available, updated every 5 -10
minutes, from ALL Registries for security applications.

Thanks

Debbie

Debbie,

Did you think this through? Assume something really much smaller than it
is. 10 TLD(cc's too) Xs 24 hrs a day Xs 20 registered per hour + 20 expired
or transferred per hour. Now include IDNs. Now assume they all compete. Now
assume 200 jurisdictions. Now assume ten percent error. Now assume 5 percent
shannanigans. Now assume 4 court/judicial orders per hour-effecting such.
And start the whole thing off by assuming 2 million to start with.

Obviously Verising/NetSol group is huge along with GoDaddy,, and yet some
countries are literally manual,, but actually UK and CN dwarf the above
numbers all by themselves. Just in those two you have well over 300
counties/provences that could effect registration.

So counting trees in this forest would be like painting the Golden Gate
Bridge or counting Square board inch in a 10 hectare bamboo farm.
Particulars are astoundingly irrelevant to the mass. When we deal here with
individual cases, we must assume a bochuliszm type importance, -- that one
millionth of a grain could infect a whole population.

Subject: [ga] List of Domain Names

Hi

I was doing some research a while back and I seem to remember coming across
several registries that offer the ability to download a list of all current
domain names for their registry. Does anyone know whether this is a
requirement from each registry or, indeed, whether there is one place that
holds all current domain names that is downloadable?

Thanks in anticipation
