GNSO Chair's Message
Reflecting on 2013 and Looking Ahead
The GNSO Council can reflect on a successful year in 2013 and an excellent opportunity to build on that success in 2014. We have demonstrated an ability to work well together throughout 2013 and have set the scene for continuing to do so in 2014 with a comprehensive all-day induction and development meeting for the Council, held at the end of the annual ICANN meeting in Buenos Aires.
Additional success in 2013 came from reaching out afresh or with a new perspective to others in the community. We experimented with a new format of interacting with the ccNSO during the ICANN Public Meeting in Buenos Aires and that seems to have gone well. We have also commenced work within a small group, together with representatives from the ICANN Government Advisory Committee, to investigate how we can enhance the early engagement of the ICANN GAC with GNSO policy development activities.
As we look forward to the work of 2014 and all of the attention being paid to international and other governance issues, it is very important to make sure our own house is in order. The GNSO Council is committed to ensuring that this is the case through an active program of work and with the recognition of the need to continuously review and improve both our policy outcomes and processes. In addition to doing what we do well, and with a focus on improvement, it is equally important to ensure that our work is well understood and recognised as an essential component of the bottom-up, multi-stakeholder model working in practice and working effectively.
Indeed, the GNSO is the place at ICANN where policy relating to generic domain names is developed and the GNSO Council is committed to ensuring we do that well in 2014 and beyond.
