Okay this article exposes some really ridiculous stuff about ICANN and the way the board thinks.

http://allafrica.com/stories/200609120904.html

Really love the last 2 paragraphs.

1. "These same critics believe that either ICANN should be handed over to an international organisation, preferably within the UN framework, or a completely new organisation based on the International Telecommunications Union model should be created. Inne says that ICANN already has an extensive 'international' component because a large number of its directors are not US citizens. She also points out that ICANN is unique in that civil society, business, and governments have significant inputs into its decision making process."

So if you go out and hire a couple of foreign board members you can label yourself internationalised now. In the case many corporations can claim that label. It seems It seems Inne believes ICANN has now fulfilled its obligations to be representative of the entire world.

2. "The California-based ICANN also argues that it does not control, or even manage the Internet - it merely administers the process of assigning numbers to domain names. Inne is currently at Highway Africa as part of her liaison functions with the African region. ICANN has deployed five liaison people around the world as part of an outreach programme to broaden awareness of Internet issues."

So, then ICANN has nothing to do with who gets approved for new TLDs, doesn't review business plans, and doesn't do the other 100 things outside of assigning numbers to domain names. Will someone please tell the board members that we would really like to know what they really do because it seems each board member and staff member has their own interpretation and then the MOU with the DoC has yet another entirely different function established for ICANN that none of them mention at all.
