Exactly Jaap, the resolution of www.kids.us is sufficient enough for NS
record to be considered properly established and defined. Nowadays, also
pure domain name should be resolved as pointing to the same site as www
alias. Missing kids.us name mapping is an old-fashion heritage, still
allowable however.

      No it's not normal at all.  KIDS.US not having NS records
    is a total DNS misconfiguration.

I have to agree with Stephane. KIDS.US exists because www.kids.us
exists. There is no rule that domain names have to have direct Resources
Records pointing to it. These kind of domain names are often called
"empty non-terminals".
