The issue is consistency, not singularity.

For example, consider how many different ways you can look up a name and find a telephone number - there are white pages, yellow pages, personal directories, 411 services, DVD databases, websites, even word of mouth.

Yet the telephone system does not collapse - the results you get are generally consistent and the error rate is low enough to be tolerated.

If any source were consistently bad, you would stop using it.

DNS roots are the same way - we want consistency. But singularity of roots is not necessary.

The issue should be "what is consistency?" - for example, is the fact that there might be boutique TLDs that are found in some roots and not in others a kind of pathology, is it a healthy sign of new ideas that are struggling to rise from boutique status to being the kind of TLD that every root will want to publish in its portfolio?
