I second Jay's motion to keep the expiration date field in the registry
data.

The word "expire" has taken on somewhat variant meanings, as it may refer to
expiration of the registrant's contract with the registrar, or expiration of
the domain name registration term with the registry. Those two
"expirations" have become de-coupled under the current registration
contracts used by several registrars, which purport to obtain the
registrant's consent to transfer the domain name to another party after
expiration of the registration contract term.

(Query the validity of defining a contract term, and then obtaining consent
to post-term actions)

Tim,
That is correct, the first part is the motion. The second part is for
considering and discussing separately. There are other ideas then just
yanking a field. I hope that clarifies my motion. I would urge that we don't
implement too drastic of a change I rather see wider support for the orginal
motion.

Jay,

Is the proposed amendment to the motion only the part about keeping the
expiration date? And the second part you are proposing we
consider/discuss separately. Is that correct?

Tim

I propose an amendment to the motion:

Keep Expiration Date in the registry output.

I propose Registries follow a documented procedure for showing
expiration
date since they are not authoritative instead of just hiding the field
flat
out:

On expiration:
A) if Auto-renewed by Registry
  1) Hide Expiration date with the words "Pending Registrar Action".
  2) After 45 days, set expiration date to be a year from initial
Expiration Date.
B) if Explicitly renewed by Registrar
  1) Show new date

Thanks,

Hello All,

For the purposes of ensuring that we can eventually converge on an
agreed version of a position paper on WHOIS, I second this motion from
Ross Rader so that the formal discussion period can commence as per our
bylaws.

I am of course open to suggestions from the constituency to improve the
motion or make changes to ensure its support.

I think it is important at this stage to get registrars agreement around
the core purpose of WHOIS in the context of ICANN's mission.

Regards,
Bruce Tonkin
