(Cameroon) ccTLD operators have discovered that since
their TLD is simply one omitted letter away from .com,
that there is a gold mine in the typo traffic that
comes their way. Accordingly, Cameroon has now
wild-carded its ccTLD and is monetizing the traffic."
Even nonsensical meaningless domains such as
http://www.16759jetuy76vbmejyd761lk.cm resolve to a
monetized parking page.
In view of the earlier findings and recommendations of
the Stability and Security Committee (posted at
http://www.icann.org/committees/security/ssac-report-09jul04.pdf
), namely, "Synthesized responses should not be
introduced into top-level domains (TLDs) or zones that
serve the public," and "Changes in registry services
should take place only after a
substantial period of notice, comment and consensus
involving both the technical community and the larger
user community", how will ICANN address this issue?
