I think I can do this without mentioning sites. TR gave a good listing of them here and at Dr. Froomkins site a bit back in time.
When reviewing them on a daily basis I have found a similarity that is not remarkable. They are all hosted by "experts" in the field. Another factoid is that they are all filled with comments by experts in the field. This is to be expected. Some call them talking heads when used in other Media. We note also the similarity and obvious standard of having some type of crosslinking or advertising involved. This may irritatate some but in all it is a good thing, which shows support, cooperation and creates information portals that make a quick look with morning coffee convenient and helpful like our morning edition newspapers. We are also noticing certain bents that ebb & flow with shifting issues and our times. Much like big print media. Some more hell bent on tearing down existing apparatus and some more supportive. In all they have grown in number, in publication and obviously in archival content. Searching and research is commonly easy or at least easier than old microfiche d!
ays.
Popularity grows on a roller coaster with events yet has settled to a sustainable average market share as time passes.
I feel almost saddened that they are falling into the same clickish club mentality of ICANN. I see the same here as in the at-large. Stroke an ego and get published and admired. Speak out for the outsider - the millions of just plain users - and if you are lucky you get nothing.
Some day some how some place the users will get a voice. But it seems as long as they are being fed and housed there is no reason to participate.
