RE: [council] Our Chair's quote in Managing Internet IP

I think the difficulty here is that SVG perhaps has to understand that he will
ALWAYS be seen as the Chair.

He may need to accept the fact that this may retard his abilities to be
represented for fear of it being a reflection of his position, no matter how
much he tells journo's otherwise.

I think it is part of the acceptance of the Chair position.

It certainly is with ICANN. Steve Crocker will now NOT be able to speak
regarding as a representative of his company. It will always be as ICANN Chair,
whether he likes it or not. I think Bruce Tonkin does this well.

Just something that SVG will have to be careful of IMO.

Thanks.

Stephane,

Thank you for confirming. The article identifies you only as GNSO Council
Chair. That is certainly a point worth taking up with the publication.

The fact of the matter is, though, that when any GNSO Council Chair (regardless
of who or when) is invited to speak at an event due in whole or part because of
that title, it will likely be very difficult to ensure that all of that
person's remarks are reported on a "speaking in a personal capacity basis."
The persons who contacted me about the article did not know that you were
speaking in a personal capacity and, as they do not spend as much time in
ICANNland as we do, don't know who you are other than GNSO Council Chair (e.g.,
which company you're associated with).

As for mistrust within Council, let's save that topic for another time.

Kristina,

I'm as disappointed in that press report you have produced, as I am that you
could think I would say something like that as GNSO Chair…

My first sentence of that day, which of course was not quoted (Managing IP
never spoke to me or asked to interview me - I did not even know they were in
attendance), but which Zahid, David and others who were in the room can
confirm, was that I was not speaking as GNSO Chair but as general manager of
INDOM.

I understand that in the current climate of mistrust that some seem intent on
maintaining within the Council, I need to make such clarifications every time I
say anything to anyone, anywhere, and so will continue to do so because that is
what the role of Chair demands.

However I don't share your view that some reading that article would think I
was speaking as GNSO Chair. Quite the contrary, most people seem to clearly
understand that even though I am the current GNSO Chair, in my normal working
day, I represent the company I work for and not anyone, or anything else.

Stéphane
