ICANN has announced the formation of a technical panel to evaluate aspects
of new proposed registry services:

Announcement of Registry Services Technical Evaluation Panel and Launch of
the Registry Request Service
While the evaluation of registry services apparently requires several
registry employees, and at least one lawyer, it appears that anyone having
insight into registrar impacts of registry services is not particularly
needed (unless one wants to count Google as a registrar).
I predict a bright future for registry service patents.
