Allow me to relate in paraphrase a jury instruction given almost everywhere before the jury begins deliberations.
It is seldom helpful or beneficial in coming to a conclusion for a person to begin by blurting out an entractable position, which they later on, feel a need to defend. This causes one and possibly another with a mild opposition opinion to become entrenched and more interested in advocating their first thought than with reasoning to a well thought out conclusion.
No one here is diminished by learning and growing in the process. Opinions once firnly held should give way to reasoned persuasive logic. Consensus requires a little bit of setting aside ones' ego and replacing it with ones' intellect.
