Stolen data due to undetected virus?
I doubt this seiously.
I suspect they were selling their database and failed to protect necessary data while doing so. Either criminal negligence of intent with corporate mens rea.
Why does this matter to ICANN?: Because ICANN is in control of all WHOIS data bases. Can you imagine the identity breach? Did you pay for your domain name with a masterbate card? Sorry if that bothers your sensibilities?
