Dear Registrars:

[This is an update: Updated items in square brackets.]

[Excom has requested a teleconference between registrars and
PIR.]

[Netsol has posted a note saying that they will not continue to support
IDNs in .com and .net. See note, attached at the end of this
posting. Verisign Japan has made a simper posting.]

You may wish for me to take this thread to a separate list.

On or about 23 December 2003, PIR announced on their web site their
intention to delete all idn.org domains which were in the domains they
migrated from Verisign. I am told that it was not announced in the
form of an Email to registrars. I know that I was advised by
telephone just before Christmas. The announcement says that PIR
will delete all RACE encoded .org domains -- bq--xxxxxxx.org -- on 1
February 2004. Here is the URL:

<x-tab> </x-tab><a href="http://www.pir.org/registrars/registrar_relations/announcements/index_html";>http://www.pir.org/registrars/registrar_relations/announcements/index_html

The Registrars in Japan are justly concerned about such an eventuality. A concerted action by registrars is in the making. Unfortunately, December 23rd was a holiday, the Emperor's Birthday, and the 26th was the last day of business until 5 January. It has taken a few days for the realization to hit home, but hit it has, and hard!!!

I think I remember that Register.com, Tucows, perhaps eNom and other registrars not domiciled in Japan also made registrations during the so called "test bed" landrush starting 9 November 2000. Was Netaka a registrar at that time, also? I think some of you also made registrations in Korean and Traditional and Simplified Chinese. All of these .org domains are scheduled for the guillotine in 30 days;-(

Question: Is this matter of sufficient general concern to the Consistency to vet the issue on this List? Or should we create a separate list?

Regards, BobC, speaking with my PSI-Japan, Inc. hat on;-}

> Dear Valued Partner,
>
> We regret to inform you that Network Solutions(r) will no longer provide
> multilingual domain name registration services or host multilingual domain
> names as of February 28, 2004. Domain name registrations and services not
> affiliated with multilingual domain names will not be affected.
>
> The .org registry, Public Interest Registry, has also announced that it will
> be deleting legacy multilingual domain names, which are RACE encoded, from
> its registry database on February 1, 2004. Network Solutions will be
> deleting them from our systems on that date as well.
>
> If you wish to continue any of your current .com and .net multilingual
> domain name registrations and related services, you will need to initiate a
> change of registrar for those .com and .net multilingual domain name
> registrations in your wholesale account to a registrar that provides and
> will host multilingual domain names (MDNs). You must transfer your .com and
> .net multilingual domain name(s) and related services to another provider
> prior to February 28, 2004 to avoid the deletion of your .com and .net
> multilingual domain name registration(s) and related services.
>
> The existing term of your domain name registration will not be affected by
> this change as long as you transfer your multilingual domain name(s) prior
> to February 28, 2004. All .org multilingual domain names will be deleted out
> of our system February 1, 2004, and .com and .net domain names will be
> deleted February 28, 2004.
>
> We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions
> or concerns regarding your multilingual domain name registration(s), please
> contact partnerprogram@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
>
> You are a valued Partner and we appreciate your allowing Network Solutions
> to provide you with domain name registration services.
>
> Sincerely,
>
