Jeff and All,

Perhaps it should not have been expected, but even more, anticipated and a responsive action preplanned.

'See this and more at; http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5439.htm

"Although Tunisia states it is committed to making progress toward a democratic system, citizens still do not have full political freedom. There are curbs on the press and on freedom of speech. Many critics have called for clearer, effective distinctions between executive, legislative, and judicial powers. The foreign press and foreign-based satellite television channels have criticized the Tunisian Government and demanded more freedom of speech and greater respect for human rights. There are frequent reports of widespread torture and abuse of prisoners, especially political prisoners, by security officers. "

What entity should be more caring about freedom of speech and press than the WSIS?

Now what is being proposed by some is that a group with members like Tunisia and Iran and North Korea run the Internet. That is a real concern and should not be taken lightly. Especially until we get the ccTLD management straightened out, Security on the net is Paramount. Ecommerce is just sitting there waiting to be held ransom by some "elected President" with no or at least no real opposing party. (Note in the election of the president of Tunisia while normally he has no competition when he does they get 3%).

Myriam and all,

Well this should have been at least expected to some degree or another.
It is a shame that this kind of behavior is present at this summit meeting.
Given the place chosen and the some of the ill conceived policies being
accepted or even those considered, and the location of this summit, such
atrocities are not all that surprising.

This to me and many of our members is a demonstration of the global
failure of leadership and testament to the fact that many in leadership
positions should not be in them at all.
