1. Response by Jay Westerdal (NameIntel.com)
Obtains info from port 43, directly from registries and registrars. Operates WHOIS proxy thru web interface. Per day - 40-60K. Stored >1 wk. All purposes other than marketing and transfers. Domain info company w/ free access - offers info in addition to WHOIS. Would use XML or web based access, prefer port 43. Need immediate access. All registrars should have to follow same rules on access. ICANN should create "whitelist" for bulk access, w/ controls to prevent abuse.
2. Response by M. Milam (Mark Monitor)
Obtains info from registrars by web interface, port 43 and bulk access licenses. Disseminates thru WHOIS proxy. Per day >1K. Stored >1 wk. All purposes other than law enforcement and marketing. Serves customer requests. Port 43 essential, bulk access essential.
3. Response by Ben Edelman (Harvard U.)
Obtains info by queries to registrars by web interface. Does not disseminate info. Variable number of queries/day. Some info stored, generally for few days. Used for statistical research on registrations and users - patterns of registration and individuals who register.
